Education

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world"
– Nelson Mandela

While Louisiana's statewide graduation rate continues to improve, 72.3% is still far below the country average as a whole. The rate of functional illiteracy in New Orleans stands at a staggering 44 percent! These low literacy rates are clearly linked to high crime rates, low educational marks, and low household incomes. Literacy provides citizens with the skills to make informed decisions, participate in a productive life, and make positive contributions to their community. Too many of New Orleans youth growing up in low income and unstable homes are falling through the cracks, dropping out of school and resorting to crime as they are woefully under-educated and ill-prepared for gainful employment. Our 12–18 year-old students are mostly from low-income households who would otherwise not have the opportunity to participate in a program such as this. We, at the COOL Cooperative, intend to contribute to stopping this cycle of poverty, to help raise graduation and literacy rates.

Our program provides daily tutoring to our kids, recognition for improvements in their test and project scores, and active care and participation by our team in each child's educational success. We strive to provide each COOL participant an avenue for success so they may inspire their peers in their schools and communities.
