Creating Outstanding Opportunities Locally

Welcome to The COOL Cooperative! We are a youth focused film education program dedicated to empowering Louisiana students from 6th grade through high school graduation. We provide a safe, stable, and engaging environment where students can find their voice and learn to express themselves through the art of filmmaking.

Mission Statement

Creating Outstanding Opportunities Locally
The COOL Cooperative is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, dedicated to creating outstanding opportunities locally for middle and high school students in the film industry. Founded in 2014, we educate, develop, and celebrate the next generation of Louisiana Storytellers. Centralized in New Orleans, the COOL provides technical training and mentorship that translates into critical skills needed for the workforce.

Our Programing

The COOL Cooperative offers a progressive program designed to meet students where they are and guide them toward a rewarding career. We offer hands-on film education to middle school students, and as they grow and progress through the program, they likewise gain responsibilities and experience.

Middle School: Foundation and Fun

Students in 6th through 8th grade begin in a supportive environment offering:

  • Hands on film education

  • Snacks

  • Safe, supervised space

  • Fun and engaging activities

  • Collaboration with peers

High School: Skills and Success

As students progress, they become "COOL Creators" and take on greater responsibilities while receiving specialized support:

  • Ages 16+ receive hourly compensation to learn with us

  • Technical, behind-the-scenes film industry skills training

  • Networking opportunities and professional connections

By the time they graduate, our COOL Creators are equipped with the confidence, skills, and network needed to step directly into well-paying jobs in the film industry.

Our Values

At the core of The COOL Cooperative are the principles that guide every decision and interaction. We are committed to a positive, consistent, and individualized approach to youth development. These principles can be articulated with a few key tenants;

  • Student-Centered Approach

  • Stability and Consistency

  • Whole Person Development

  • Leadership by Example

  • Positive Reinforcement

  • Technical skills and collaboration

-COOL Mentor

Michael Applebaum

"The time I spent mentoring summer camp students at the Cool Cooperative was just as valuable and enriching for me as a cinematographer as I hope it was for the kids in this incredible program. Not much compares to watching a student grow through the process—gaining confidence, developing technical understanding, and making artistic choices in a completely hands-on learning environment. The importance of giving young people from all backgrounds the opportunity to get a head start and begin experimenting with filmmaking cannot be overstated. The camaraderie between students and professionals working side by side is truly magical - and deeply fulfilling.
Thank you to everyone at The Cool Cooperative for welcoming me into such a special and unforgettable experience. I can’t wait to come back!"

"The Cool Cooperative has changed my life in amazing ways. As a kid in New Orleans there are not many places that grant filmmaking knowledge to youths like me. But when I was   introduced to the Cool they gave me opportunities and supported me in my interests with film. From work shops to making my own film they supported me in every way and I am truly grateful."

-COOL Parent

Star Gomez

"Everything about The COOL’s mission is exemplified in the dedication that the staff showcases to their students. Everything, from their connective communication style to their motivating leadership, is consistent and provides an engaging platform for the students to receive first-hand training in various aspects of the film industry. I am honored to witness Zoe’s usually shy personality come to life as she has settled into being a cohort member. She absolutely adores the staff and students and often speaks about how much more confident she feels being able to be in an environment that encourages our youth to create, collaborate, learn, share, and, most of all, have fun while paving the way as our future industry professionals!"
